Skin Lesion Biopsy

When a lesion requires further investigation, a biopsy may be recommended to obtain a tissue sample for examination by a pathology laboratory.

Depending on the lesion and its location, this may involve:

  • Shave biopsy
  • Punch biopsy
  • Incisional biopsy
  • Excisional biopsy

The most appropriate approach will depend on the clinical circumstances.

Skin Cancer Treatment

If a skin cancer is diagnosed, we will discuss the diagnosis and available management options with you.

Treatment is individualised according to factors such as the type of skin cancer, its size and location, pathology findings, your medical history and other clinical considerations.

Surgical Management

Where clinically appropriate, surgical treatment may include:

  • Standard surgical excision
  • Curettage and cautery
  • Shave procedures
  • Simple wound closure
  • More complex wound repair where appropriate

Where treatment requires expertise or facilities outside the scope of our clinic, we can arrange or recommend referral to an appropriate specialist service.

Non-Surgical Management

Not every skin cancer or precancerous lesion requires surgical excision.

Depending on the diagnosis and individual circumstances, non-surgical treatment may be considered.

This can include management options for selected:

  • Actinic keratoses
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Superficial skin cancers
  • Field change from chronic sun exposure

Where appropriate, treatment options, expected outcomes, potential adverse effects and alternative approaches will be discussed before treatment is commenced.
